Public Policy

Goal

Dedicate University resources to public understanding of societal issues and stimulate action for positive change.

Action

Facilitate engagement of faculty and students in public policy development.

Faculty and students are engaged in public policy development across disciplines with local, provincial and national governments and international organizations. Faculty and students have much to contribute to the public policy development primarily through their research. Given the complex and diverse interactions with public policy development, what are the opportunities to share the opportunities and risks associated with this form of engagement?

The outcomes of research in diverse fields of study may have public policy implications, but the skills and knowledge required to bridge academic and public policy processes do not always align. The university may be able to facilitate an alignment of these capacities.

How can UBC facilitate student and faculty participation in public policy development?

Additional Questions to Provoke Discussion

  • What roles are appropriate for faculty and/or students to assume in the public policy development process?
  • What are the potential risks of engaging in public policy development, given the range of university interests and partnerships?
  • How do we identify public policy expertise at UBC and support opportunities to engage with public policy decision-makers and community?
  • How do we recognize contributions to public policy development?
  • How can UBC support community partners in their participation in public policy development?
  • How can government relation position faculty and students as potential public policy contributors?
  • Are there ways that the university can bring together expert knowledge and public policy understanding in non-traditional environments?
